The Challenges Uninsured Pregnant Women Face
Even though pregnancy is an amazing thing – bringing a new life to our world – it is fraught with risk to both the mother and her unborn child. Usually when one thinks of risks in this context the instinctive reaction is ‘pregnancy complications’. However, in this article I refer to a different type of risk.
The problem is that health insurance companies do not make life easier for pregnant women. In fact, if an uninsured pregnant woman wishes to obtain insurance, she will face great obstacles in doing so, as most companies will view her pregnancy as a “pre-existing condition” and refuse to accept her.
Fortunately, there are several companies that offer a special type of insurance, maternity insurance, for pregnant women that possess no insurance.
There are two ways in which a pregnant woman may be able to obtain such an insurance. First, by shopping around: the internet has a so much information on practically everything, so by spending several hours it is more than likely that several alternatives will be located. Second, there are several federally funded programs which exist to help uninsured pregnant women with low income: if one is eligible, this could be a very good alternative.
Regardless of the solution that is obtained, it is crucial that the pregnant woman makes sure it provides for all her needs, including visits to the physician’s clinic and not just pay for the cost of the delivery and hospitalization.
